"Sometimes the best therapist has fur and four legs"
Born in October 2021, Simba has been a part of the practice since the age of 8 weeks. He is a Spoodle (Cocker Spaniel x Miniature Poodle). His coat does not shed which makes him ideal for anyone with allergies to dog hair. He is fully vaccinated and kept clean and hygienic.
Simba adores humans and has a very loving temperament. He loves belly rubs. Upon greeting clients he says a hello and then will head for his bed. When needed, he provides comfort to clients. For clients who do not wish to interact with him, he is happy to stay in his bed and just be present.
Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) in Psychology
The use of therapy dogs is referred to as Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT). This is an evidence-based secondary therapeutic technique involving the use of animals in sessions. Psychologists may utilise AAT in addition to other evidence-based therapies, such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT).
Studies have shown that AAT with dogs is an effective aid for working with clients who may have various mental health difficulties. They provide attention and comfort.
Research demonstrates that looking into the dog’s eyes boosts the production of dopamine and other neurochemicals in our body.
Research into the benefits include:
When struggling depression and traumas, people can find solace and peace playing with animals or by simply being around them.
Provide emotional support when needed.
Asssist with regulating emotions by keeping their minds engaged in the present moment.
Offer unconditional love.
You can be who you are, there are no expectations or judgement coming from that dog.
